San Diego Zoo - FGTD Day 8

We were told multiple times that we picked the perfect day to come by quite a few people because it was overcast and cool so the animals were out and really active. There also wasn't a lot of people there either so we were able to have some good interactions with the animals.

Some crazy trees that looked like something from a Dr. Suess book

We were lucky to catch these guys awake. We were told they sleep for more than half the day everyday

My two little zookeepers
Mason
Gavin
Kangaroos
Chloe was so excited to see the giraffe's. She kept asking when we were going to get to them.

I have seen giraffe's before, but I'm still amazed at how tall they are and its fun to watch them walk.
The rhinoceros really impressed me. I've seen one before at the Honolulu Zoo, but not this up close. Their armor skin is so impressive. It really does look liked pieces of armor that he's wearing.

More HUGE animals that are impressive to watch

This elephant started peeing and then pooped while we were there. Gavin said, "Seriously? This is not the time" and then said the elephants you know what looked like a big fire hose. Oh the things your kids learn and see at the zoo are sometimes not what you expect!

Mason and Chloe wanted to pose on every statue they could and then asked me to take a picture of them.
Time for a quick nap
This elephant wanted the tasty green snack on the other side of then fence so he decided to go for it!
I've never seen an elephant climb on a fence before

Sticking their hands in the mouth of a saber tooth tiger skeleton

The view from the Skyfari

We went on a tour of the zoo on an open air double decker bus. It was pretty fun and our bus driver is also the man who does a lot of the animal noises for movies in Hollywood.
Chloe and I
The grizzly bears Scout and Montana. They are from Idaho.

We stood in front of this screen and they photo shopped the baby panda's into the kids hands

Hippos

Look again. This is NOT a headless monkey. It's a monkey standing on it's head. It almost had us fooled!

Mason made a new friend!

Her name is Sandy and she hung out with us for quite awhile

Literally inches away from a gorilla

Time for your dental exam
Uvula check!
Leave it to Chloe to find the baby! She loves babies and she was talking to this one telling it how cure it was.
I sprouted a nose while at the zoo

Just hanging around watching the peacock in the tree

The kids with their San Diego Zoo souvenirs.
Mason has a leopard named Greeny (his favorite color), Gavin has a baby seal names Sebastian and Chloe picked out a tie dyed snake she named Lucy.

I was so glad Gavin found this seal. He wanted to get one yesterday at Seaworld, but he had already picked out the hat and even though I REALLY wanted to get it for him the rule was one souvenir a day so I had to tell him no. When he found this one his face lit up and I was so excited for him : )

Sebastion the Seal getting a big hug from Lucy the snake.

Misc.

Mason kept telling me the animals at the zoo were fake and not real. I think it's because of our 3 days in Disneyland where they really were fake.

We ate at the Tree Top Cafe while we were there and it really was high up in the tree tops. Gavin was our walking/talking encyclopedia. He taught us things about animals that we didn't even know. We even saw a completely weird animal that looked like a prehistoric horse with zebra legs. Gavin informed us it was an Okapi and told us all about it. We got schooled by a 7 year old!

We also had to explain to Gavin was "spray range" of the lion was because according to the sign it's 7-8 feet for a lion.

It was a HUGE zoo. We were there as soon as it opened at 9am and left when it closed at 5pm and still didn't see everything even with out bus tour. We had a really fun day. The kids kept saying,"We jumped out a window" and then would laugh. They were quoting Baymax from the Big Hero 6 movie.

We saw a battle ship just off the shore on the way to the zoo this morning.

After the zoo we stopped at the San Diego Temple. Chloe kept calling it a castle.

Then we paid $3.65 per gallon for gas (It's less than $2/gallon in Idaho), went to a CVS pharmacy to go potty because there was no parking at the gas station and then spent the next 5 hours in the van and only traveled 110 miles.  That's 22 mph!! Ugh. We made it to Barstow, CA and decided to call it a night.
